⚠️ Risk level: Medium to high—wrong moves can make recovery harder

💡 Pro insight: Most of the time, the data isn’t gone—it’s just harder to reach

⚙️ If your phone won’t power on or you don’t want to risk it, your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store can take a look and help recover what’s still there

Fix it for me

When someone walks in with a dead phone, their first question isn't usually about the phone itself—it's whether or not we can save their important data from it. Photos, contacts, notes... all the stuff that matters.

And the answer isn't always what people expect.

A dead phone doesn’t automatically mean your data is gone. In a lot of cases, it’s still there—you just need the right way to access it. The tricky part is figuring out what you’re dealing with before you make a move that could make recovery harder.

Across uBreakiFix by Asurion stores, we’ve worked on millions of devices over the years—phones, tablets, laptops, consoles—you name it. Data recovery questions come up constantly, and the answer is almost never as simple as “yes” or “no.” Let's walk through what’s actually possible, what usually isn’t, and what you can safely try before deciding whether to bring it in.

In this guide:

  • When dead phone data recovery is actually possible
  • When data is likely gone for good
  • How different types of damage affect data recovery
  • What you can try at home
  • Why DIY can go wrong
  • How we recover data from dead phones

When dead phone data recovery is actually possible

These days, it’s honestly harder to find a situation where data recovery isn’t possible.

Most phones are constantly backing things up in the background—iCloud®, Google Drive™, things like that. If those services were turned on and not full, your photos, contacts, and files are probably already saved somewhere else. I usually explain it like this: even if the phone itself won’t turn on, you can often sign into your account on another device and everything shows back up where it belongs.

If the phone still powers on—even with a broken screen—that’s another good sign. In those cases, we can usually connect it to a computer in the store and pull data directly off the device.

When data is likely gone for good

This is the part no one wants to hear. If everything was stored locally on the phone and there was never a backup—no cloud, no second device—that data is at risk.

Data is only really safe when it exists in more than one place. If there’s only one copy and that storage gets damaged, there isn’t anything to recover from. That’s when we start looking at what’s realistically possible and where the limits are.

How different types of damage affect data recovery

Not all “dead phones” are equal.

Water damage and heavy impact are the biggest concerns. Both can physically affect the internal storage, which can lead to partial—or complete—data loss.

On the other hand, power-related issues are usually more forgiving. If the battery or charging system failed, there’s a good chance the data is still intact—we just need a way to power the phone on.

That’s why we always start by figuring out what actually failed before making assumptions.

What you can try at home

Before writing the phone off, there are a couple of things worth trying.

  1. Leave it on the charger longer than you think it needs to be on there. Some phones need an hour or more before they show any sign of life, especially if the battery is deeply drained. Unplugging too early is one of the most common mistakes we see.
  2. Check the charging port. If it’s packed with lint or debris, the charger won’t make proper contact, and the phone will stay “dead” even if everything inside is fine. Check out our tips for properly cleaning your charging port.

Wireless charging can sometimes help as a workaround, but if you can get a solid wired connection, that’s always the best way to test.

Why DIY can go wrong

Anytime someone tries to open the phone or remove the internal storage themselves, there’s a real risk of damaging the components that actually hold the data. These chips are soldered directly to the board—they’re not meant to be handled without the right tools. Things can go from recoverable to permanent loss pretty quickly.

We’ve seen situations where the data was still there… until someone tried to extract it on their own. Once those connections are damaged, there’s not much left to work with.

How we recover data from dead phones

When we’re working on data recovery in-store, the first step is figuring out what actually failed. Is it power? The display? The storage itself?

From there, we use the safest method to access the data. Sometimes that’s as simple as getting the phone powered on and transferring files. Other times, it involves specialized tools to work directly with the internal components. Either way, the goal is the same—recover what’s there without creating new problems.

If you're ready for us to take a look, bring it to your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion. We’ll check whether the data is still accessible, walk you through your options, and use the right tools to recover what’s there without risking further damage.

FAQ

Can data be recovered from a phone that won’t turn on?

Yes—if the storage isn’t damaged. Many “dead” phones just have power issues.

Can I recover data from a phone with a broken screen?

If it still powers on, we can often connect it to a computer and transfer the data.

Does water damage destroy data permanently?

It can. Water can damage internal storage components, which makes recovery much harder.

What’s the biggest mistake people make?

Not letting the phone charge long enough—or trying to open it and making things worse.

Can a repair shop recover data from a dead phone?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the condition of the storage, but we recover data like this regularly.
