PS5 disc drive issues: Here’s what you can try—and what you shouldn’t

Your PS5 isn’t reading the room—or apparently the disc

🧰 Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Easy (Simple, with a few catches)

⏱ Time involved: 10–20 minutes for basic troubleshooting

⚠️ Risk level: Medium—the safe fixes are easy; opening the console or messing inside the drive is not

💡 Pro insight: One game won't load? Suspect the disc. Nothing will load and your PS5 is making grinding noises? Now we're looking at the drive.

⚙️ Tried the easy fixes? If your PS5 still won't read discs, bring it to a uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and let us figure out what's happening inside the drive.

Fix it for me

You put in a game. Your PS5® thinks about it for a second… and apparently decides it has no idea what you're talking about.

Before we blame the disc drive, though, give the disc itself a fair trial. We've helped troubleshoot enough PS5 disc problems in our stores to know that several things can masquerade as a failing drive.

The pattern is what matters. Let's figure out whether you're dealing with a bad disc, something you can safely fix yourself, or a disc drive that's ready for professional attention.

How to tell if the problem is the disc or disc drive

Grab another game or movie and try it. Seriously—that's one of the most useful tests you can do.

If one or two discs don't work but everything else loads normally, the problem is probably those discs. Check them for scratches or grime and give them a careful clean.

If nothing works, that's different. Multiple clean discs failing points more strongly toward the PS5 disc drive.

Sound gives you another clue. A healthy drive isn't supposed to soundtrack your gaming session with clicking, buzzing, or grinding. If you're hearing those noises while the console tries to read a disc, we'd start suspecting a mechanical problem.

PS5 disc read error fixes worth trying

Before you do anything ambitious, stick with the fixes that aren't likely to turn one problem into two.

  1. Restart your PS5. Simple? Yes. Still worth doing? Also yes.
  2. Try another disc. This quickly tells you whether you're chasing a console problem or one damaged game.
  3. Clean the disc. Use a soft cloth and wipe gently from the center outward.
  4. Double-check the disc orientation. Make sure you're inserting it correctly for how your console is positioned. Sounds simple... but you'd be surprised how often that's the problem.
  5. Check for a PS5 system update. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software.

If several clean discs still won't read after you've restarted and updated the console, you've pretty much exhausted the easy wins.

PS5 disc drive DIY fixes we'd skip

This is where we'd put a little distance between you and the toolbox. A few DIY attempts that can make PS5 disc drive problems worse:

  • Blowing air directly into the disc drive. You can push dust farther inside instead of removing it.
  • Putting cotton swabs or other objects into the slot. The drive has delicate components that weren't designed to meet your Q-tip. Learn tips on how to properly clean your PS5.
  • Forcing a disc in or out. If the mechanism is resisting, force isn't going to improve the situation.
  • Opening the PS5 without the proper tools or experience. It's easy to damage connectors, misalign the drive, or create an entirely new repair.

Opening the console may also affect warranty coverage, so we'd check the manufacturer's guidance before attempting any internal work.

Signs your PS5 disc drive is failing

A failing PS5 disc drive usually gives you more evidence than a single "unrecognized disc" message. Watch—and listen—for these:

  • The drive clicks, buzzes, or grinds when trying to read a disc.
  • Discs repeatedly get rejected or automatically eject.
  • The disc doesn't spin properly—or at all.

If this is the point you've reached, bring your PS5 to your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store. We'll diagnose what's actually happening inside the drive and repair the problem without asking you to learn console surgery from a video.

FAQ

Why is my PS5 not reading discs?

Dirty or scratched discs, incorrect disc insertion, dust, software problems, or a worn disc drive can all cause PS5 disc read errors. Try another clean disc first to help narrow down whether the problem is the disc or console.

How do I know if my PS5 disc drive is broken?

If no discs work, the drive makes clicking, buzzing, or grinding noises, discs repeatedly eject, or discs don't spin properly, you're likely dealing with a mechanical disc drive problem.

Why does my PS5 say unrecognized disc?

The disc may be dirty, scratched, inserted incorrectly, or unreadable. If the error happens with several known-good discs, the problem may be the PS5 disc drive rather than the discs themselves.

Can I clean inside my PS5 disc drive?

We wouldn't recommend it. Cleaning the disc itself is safer. Brushes, cotton swabs, compressed air, or other objects inserted into the drive can damage delicate components or push debris farther inside.

Can a PS5 update fix disc read errors?

It can if a software problem or corrupted system file is interfering with disc recognition. If the drive is making mechanical noises or rejecting every disc, though, an update isn't going to repair the hardware.
