MacBook Pro won’t turn on—when to DIY and when to stop

Your MacBook ghosting you mid-day is no one's idea of a good time

Gradient background with an image of a floating MacBook Pro that won't turn on

🧰 Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ (Basic checks are simple—repairs aren’t)

⏱ Time involved: 5–30 minutes for troubleshooting

⚠️ Risk level: Medium to high—opening the device adds real risk

💡 Pro insight: The most common cause we see is a power issue—not total device failure

⚙️ If it still won’t power on after the basics, your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store can diagnose what failed and safely bring it back to life.

Fix it for me

When a MacBook Pro® won’t turn on, it’s easy to jump straight to the worst-case scenario. It feels like the kind of problem that ends with a replacement, not a quick fix. But often, it’s not that dramatic.

What we usually see in our stores is something simpler—a drained battery, a charger that’s not doing its job, or a system that just needs a reset. The challenge isn’t as much about fixing it—it’s knowing where to start and when to stop before you make things worse.

Before you assume your MacBook Pro is toast, here are the steps we recommend you work through—and when we recommend you tap in a pro for help.

The most common reasons a MacBook Pro won’t turn on

The most common cause we see? Power issues. That could be:

  • A completely drained battery
  • A faulty charger
  • Or a connection that isn’t making proper contact.

After that, we start looking at smaller things that still have a big impact—accessories interfering with startup, or the system’s power controller not responding the way it should. Most of the time, the laptop itself hasn’t failed. Something is just preventing it from powering up.

Safe troubleshooting steps to try first

Start by unplugging everything connected to the MacBook Pro. External drives, adapters, anything that didn’t come built into the laptop—take it out of the equation. Then plug in a charger you know works and make sure the connection is solid.

From there, give it time to charge. Not a quick plug-and-check, but actual time. A deeply drained battery can take a while before it shows any sign of life, and unplugging too early is one of the most common mistakes we see.

If it powers on after that, you’re done. No deeper repair needed.

How to reset power or SMC on a MacBook Pro

If nothing changes, the next step is resetting how the MacBook handles power. The goal here isn’t forcing the MacBook to turn on. It’s giving it a clean starting point. Here's how:

  • On newer MacBook models (Apple Silicon—M1, M2, M3 and newer), this is straightforward. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds, release it, then press it again like you normally would. That clears the current power state and can resolve minor startup issues.
  • On older MacBook models (Intel-based, generally pre-2020), the reset process depends on the internal hardware—especially whether it has a T2 security chip or not. That’s where it’s worth slowing down. If you’re not sure which version you have, guessing through reset steps can cause more confusion than it solves.

Signs it’s more than a dead battery

At a certain point, the problem behind a MacBook Pro not turning on stops looking like a simple power issue. If your MacBook Pro is doing any of the following, these are bigger warning signs:

  • Getting unusually hot
  • Showing signs of swelling near the battery
  • Had random shutdowns before it stopped turning on
  • Loud or constant fan activity
  • Visual glitches leading up to the failure

Those aren’t “wait it out” symptoms. They point to internal components not working the way they should and you should use extreme caution before trying any DIYs.

Why DIY can go wrong

Battery repairs pose serious risks. Lithium-ion batteries don’t handle mistakes well, and improper removal can lead to expansion or failure. What starts as a battery issue can turn into a damaged device—or worse.

We also see problems from people trying to remove internal components without the right tools. It doesn’t take much. A slipped screwdriver or a scraped connection can break delicate circuitry that’s much harder to fix than the original issue. Most of the time, it’s not about effort—it’s about how unforgiving the hardware is.

When to bring your MacBook Pro in

If you’ve checked the charger, let it sit, and tried a reset without any change, that’s where it makes sense to stop troubleshooting and start testing.

Bring it in if:

  • There’s still no power after charging and reset
  • You notice heat or swelling
  • The MacBook was shutting down unexpectedly before this
  • You’re not sure what actually failed

At that point, the MacBook Pro repair experts at your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion can help. We can do a free diagnostic to test the power system, battery, and internal components together and tell you exactly what’s going on and walk you through options.

FAQ

Why won’t my MacBook Pro turn on at all?

The most common cause we see is a power issue, like a drained battery or faulty charger, but it can also be internal hardware.

How do I know if it’s just a dead MacBook battery?

If there’s no heat, no swelling, and no previous issues, it’s often power-related—but testing confirms it.

What’s the first thing I should try?

Disconnect accessories, plug into a working charger, and give it time before trying a power reset.

Can I fix a MacBook that won’t turn on myself?

You can try basic troubleshooting, but internal repairs carry risk that we recommend leaving to a pro.

Is it safe to replace a MacBook Pro battery myself?

Not recommended. Battery damage can cause serious issues, and we see a lot of devices come in after DIY attempts.
