MacBook not charging? How to tell if it’s the port or the battery

It might not be the battery—it just looks guilty

Charger plugged in and not charging MacBook

🧰 Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ (Mostly observation and basic checks)

⏱ Time involved: 5–20 minutes

⚠️ Risk level: Low—no need to open anything yet

💡 Pro insight: The most common cause we see isn’t the battery—it’s a connection issue somewhere in the charging chain

⚙️ Still not charging? Your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store can test the port, battery, and power system together so you’re not guessing.

Fix it for me

When a MacBook stops charging, most people go straight to the battery. It makes sense—it’s the obvious suspect. But more often than not, the battery just looks guilty.

What we usually see is something simpler. A worn cable. A loose connection. Dust packed into the charging port just enough to block contact. The tricky part is that a bad port and a bad battery can look almost identical at first, so the goal isn’t to guess—it’s to narrow it down.

How to troubleshoot a MacBook that won’t charge

Before you assume anything about the laptop itself, start with the power source. Power doesn’t go straight from the wall into your battery—it moves through a chain. Outlet → adapter → cable → port → battery. If anything in that chain breaks, charging stops.

Start simple. Try a different outlet. Swap the cable if you can. Use another adapter if one’s available. If the MacBook starts charging with a different setup, you’ve already found the issue—and more importantly, you’ve avoided taking the laptop apart for no reason.

How to tell if your MacBook charging port is the problem

If the charger checks out, the next likely culprit is the port.

Ports wear down over time. They collect dust, lint, and just enough debris to block a solid connection. It doesn’t take much, but it’s enough to stop charging completely.

You’ll usually notice it in small ways first.

  • The cable doesn’t sit quite right when you plug it in.
  • Charging cuts in and out if the cable moves.
  • Sometimes there’s no charging indicator at all, even though everything else seems fine.

If the connection feels inconsistent, that’s usually a port issue—not a battery one. A careful clean with compressed air or a non-metal tool can sometimes bring it back immediately—read tips in our guide to cleaning charging ports. If that fixes it, you’re done. If not, the port itself may be worn or damaged.

How to tell if your MacBook battery is bad

Battery problems show up differently.

When the battery is the issue, power is reaching the laptop—it just isn’t being stored properly. That’s when you start seeing things like the MacBook only working when plugged in, the battery draining faster than it should, or the system shutting down even when it says there’s charge left.

At that point, it’s not a connection issue. It’s the battery wearing out.

You can confirm that by checking MacBook battery health in macOS. If it’s significantly degraded, replacement is usually the next step.

Why your MacBook says “Not Charging”

We see this one throw people off all the time (it even throws us experts off sometimes, if I'm being honest).

Sometimes, nothing is actually broken. macOS actively manages charging to extend battery life. It may pause charging at around 80%, display “Not Charging,” or adjust behavior based on how you use the device.

If you’re seeing those messages, there’s a good chance your MacBook is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

A quick restart can clear temporary glitches, but not every “Not Charging” message means there’s a problem.

What should you do now?

If you’ve worked through all of this and still don’t have a clear answer—or nothing changes—that’s where testing matters more than guessing.

The MacBook repair experts at your nearest uBreakiFix by Asurion can run a diagnostic at no cost to you to pinpoint the issue and fix it fast—often as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Why is my MacBook plugged in but not charging?

It’s usually a charging port issue, battery wear, or macOS managing charging to preserve battery health.

How do I know if my MacBook battery is bad?

Look for fast drain, shutdowns with charge remaining, or the laptop only working while plugged in.

Can a MacBook charging port be repaired?

Yes. Ports can often be cleaned or replaced depending on the damage.

Should I replace my MacBook battery myself?

We wouldn't recommend it, unless you’re experienced with opening your MacBook and have all of the proper tools on hand. Internal components are delicate and tightly packed.

Why does my MacBook stop charging at 80%?

That’s a built-in feature designed to extend battery lifespan.
