iPhone battery dying too soon? Try this first.

You may not need a new battery just yet.

uBreakiFix repair expert in shop looking at ways to make iPhone battery last longer

🧰 Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ (Mostly settings and habits)

⏱ Time involved: 5–20 minutes

⚠️ Risk level: Medium—easy to chase the wrong fix

💡 Pro insight: Most fast-draining iPhones we see don’t actually need a new battery right away. It’s usually background activity or a setting quietly doing too much.

⚙️ Still draining fast? Your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store can test the battery and confirm whether it’s time for a replacement.

Fix it for me

When someone walks in and says their iPhone® “can’t make it through the day anymore,” my first thought isn’t that the battery’s toast—it’s that something is probably working harder than it should. The challenge is figuring out what that something is before you assume the battery needs replacing.

Sometimes it’s a recent update that changed how apps behave. Sometimes it’s a new app quietly running in the background. Other times, it’s just a few settings that have piled up over time. Before you start shopping for a new battery, there are a few quick checks that can tell you whether the problem actually is the battery itself or something else draining it. Let's walk through them.

In this guide:

  • Check your iPhone battery health first
  • What’s actually draining your iPhone battery
  • The settings that make the biggest difference
  • iPhone battery myths that don’t hold up
  • When it’s time to replace your iPhone battery
  • FAQ

Check your iPhone battery health first

This is always step one. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.

If the maximum capacity is below 80%, the battery isn’t holding a charge the way it used to. That’s Apple’s benchmark, and it’s usually when replacement starts to make sense.

If you’re above 80%, the battery itself often isn’t the main issue yet—which means you’ll get more mileage out of adjusting settings than swapping parts.

What’s actually draining your iPhone battery

The most common drain we see isn’t brightness or games—it’s background activity.

Apps that refresh constantly, pull location data, or sync in the background can keep your phone working even when it’s sitting untouched. The easiest way to spot this is by going to Settings > Battery and looking at which apps used the most power in the last 24 hours.

If you see an app near the top that you barely opened—or one showing a lot of “background activity”—that’s usually the culprit. Fix that by closing the app, adjusting its background settings, or changing location permissions, and a lot of “bad battery” complaints disappear without replacing anything.

If the battery graph shows steady drain while the phone hasn’t been in use, that’s your clue that something is quietly working in the background.

The settings that make the biggest difference

If there’s one place to start, it’s Background App Refresh. That one change alone often buys people hours of extra battery life. Most people don’t realize how many apps refresh themselves all day long—even when you’re not using them.

Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off for apps that don’t need to update constantly.

While you’re in the settings, there are two other areas worth checking:

  • Location Services: Set apps to “While Using” instead of “Always.”
  • Mail Fetch: If your email is set to Push, consider switching to Fetch or increasing the fetch interval.

None of these changes will make your phone feel slower day to day—but they do cut down on the constant background activity that sucks the life out of your battery.

iPhone battery myths that don’t hold up

We hear these battery boosting myths all the time, and I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but... they don’t actually help.

  1. Keeping your phone in Low Power Mode all the time. This one is fine in a pinch, but it limits performance without fixing the underlying drain.
  2. Letting the battery die completely to “reset” it. Lithium batteries don’t need full drains. Running to 0% regularly actually wears them out faster.
  3. Charging overnight ruins your battery. Modern iPhones manage charging well. Heat is the real enemy—not overnight charging itself.
  4. Battery saver apps. Most run in the background nonstop, which defeats the purpose.

If a fix sounds extreme or vague, it usually isn’t the answer.

When it’s time to replace your iPhone battery

If battery health is under 80%, or you’re seeing:

  • Sudden drops from 30% to 5%
  • Random shutdowns
  • Warmth during basic tasks

…the battery cells are likely worn out.

DIY battery swaps can be risky. iPhone batteries can swell or puncture if removed incorrectly, and we see plenty of phones damaged during “quick” replacements. Then you’ve got a much bigger problem on your hands than a draining battery.

A professional replacement is faster and safer—and it keeps a battery issue from turning into a full device repair. At your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store, our technicians are trained to repair iPhones as an Independent Repair Provider for Apple®. That means we use Apple parts, tools, and equipment to get your phone back up and running the way it should.

FAQ

Why is my iPhone battery draining so fast all of a sudden?

Usually background apps, recent updates, or battery health dropping below 80%.

Does closing apps save battery life?

No. Reopening apps uses more power than letting iOS manage them.

When should I replace my iPhone battery?

When battery health drops below 80% or when you see sudden drops and shutdowns after adjusting settings.

Can I replace my iPhone battery myself?

It’s risky. We see damaged phones from DIY swaps all the time. Professional replacement is safer.

How long does an iPhone battery replacement take?

Often the same day. A technician can test your battery and replace it quickly if needed.
