Google Pixel problems: DIY fixes that work—and those that make things worse

Step one should never involve a screwdriver. Ask us how we know.

uBreakiFix expert repairing a Google Pixel in the shop

Google Pixel® phones do a lot, so when something suddenly feels off—your battery starts draining faster, charging gets finicky, Bluetooth keeps dropping—you notice pretty quickly.

Luckily, many Pixel issues have fixes you can safely try at home—the trick is knowing which ones. Restarting your phone? Absolutely. Taking a sharp object to the USB-C port because you spotted some lint? Put the paper clip down and slowly step away.

Let's walk through other Google Pixel fixes you can DIY and which ones are best left to a Google repair pro at a nearby uBreakiFix® by Asurion store.

In this guide:

  • Google Pixel battery draining fast
  • Google Pixel not charging
  • Google Pixel overheating
  • Pixel Wi-Fi and Bluetooth problems
  • Pixel apps crashing or phone running slow
  • Why Pixel DIY doesn't always go as planned
  • Easy ways to prevent common Google Pixel problems

Google Pixel battery draining fast

DIY difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ | Easy place to start—settings and app tweaks are low risk

A Pixel battery suddenly draining faster doesn't automatically mean the battery needs replacing.

Start by checking battery usage to see which apps are consuming the most power. If something is running constantly in the background, reduce its background activity and make sure both your apps and Android are up to date.

Heat matters here too. Regular exposure to extreme temperatures can accelerate battery wear, so leaving your Pixel baking in a hot car isn't doing its battery any favors.

If you've dealt with the obvious power hogs and your Pixel battery still drains unusually fast during normal use, that's when we'd stop tweaking settings and have the battery checked by a pro. Replacing a Pixel battery means opening a tightly sealed phone, and that's a much more difficult DIY than changing a few settings.

Google Pixel not charging

DIY difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ | Easy to troubleshoot—tricky if the port is the problem

Before blaming the USB-C port, swap the easy stuff.

Try another compatible cable and adapter. Test a different outlet too. If your Pixel suddenly starts charging normally, you've found the problem—and didn't have to repair anything.

If it still won't charge, look at the port. Pocket lint and debris can keep a USB-C cable from seating properly, but be careful about how you clean it. This is not the time to grab a needle, pin, knife, or whatever tiny metal object happens to be nearby. The contacts inside the port are small, and damaging one can turn "my Pixel won't charge" into "my Pixel needs a charging port repair." We've seen this a lot—read more about charging port cleaning disasters and how to avoid them.

If different cables and adapters don't help, the connection feels loose, or charging only works when you hold the cable at a certain angle, we'd have the port checked. Pixel charging port replacement requires opening the device and specialized tools, so that's where we'd call the DIY portion complete.

Google Pixel overheating

DIY difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ | A few easy checks are fair game—opening the phone isn't

A Pixel getting warm while you're gaming, streaming, or doing something demanding isn't necessarily a problem. But if it's getting unusually hot during everyday use, that's worth troubleshooting.

Start with a few simple checks:

  1. Restart your Pixel. This clears temporary processes or software glitches that may be making the phone work harder than it should.
  2. Check for Android and app updates. Updates can include bug fixes and performance improvements that address software-related overheating.
  3. Try Safe Mode. If the overheating stops in Safe Mode, that's a strong clue that a third-party app is contributing to the problem.

Also pay attention to where and when you're using your phone. Extreme heat can accelerate battery wear, so give your Pixel a chance to cool down if it's been sitting in direct sun or another hot environment.

If your Pixel still gets overly hot during light, everyday use after these steps, we'd stop troubleshooting there. Persistent overheating can point to a battery or other hardware problem, and diagnosing that means getting inside a tightly sealed phone—not a DIY we'd recommend.

Pixel Wi-Fi and Bluetooth problems

DIY difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ | Very DIY-friendly—most fixes happen right in your settings

Wi-Fi dropping out halfway through something important is annoying. Bluetooth deciding it no longer recognizes the earbuds you use every day isn't much better.

Fortunately, connectivity issues are often software-related.

Restart the phone and make sure it's updated first. If you're still having trouble across multiple Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth accessories, resetting your network settings can help clear connection problems. Just remember that doing so removes saved network information, so you'll need to reconnect your Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices afterward.

Test the pattern too. If one pair of headphones won't connect, the headphones may be the problem. If multiple Bluetooth devices or Wi-Fi networks keep dropping out after you've worked through the software fixes, that's when we'd have the Pixel checked rather than continuing to reset things and hope for a different result.

Pixel apps crashing or phone running slow

DIY difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ | Plenty to try before hardware enters the conversation

If your Pixel suddenly feels sluggish or an app keeps crashing, don't assume the phone itself is failing. Start by figuring out whether the problem follows one app or the whole phone.

  1. Update Android and your apps. Google regularly releases bug fixes and performance improvements, so getting everything current is an easy first move.
  2. Pay attention to which apps are causing trouble. If the same app keeps crashing while everything else works normally, update it first. If you don't use it anymore, uninstalling it is an easy way to rule it out.
  3. Check what's running in the background. Apps you rarely use can still consume resources behind the scenes. Review your apps and remove the ones you don't need.
  4. Try Safe Mode if the problem continues. Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If your Pixel suddenly runs normally there, that's a pretty strong clue that a third-party app is behind the slowdown or crashes.

If you've updated everything, cleaned up unnecessary apps, and the Pixel still freezes, crashes, or runs unusually slowly outside of one particular app, we'd suggest taking it to a pro for a diagnostic.

Why Pixel DIY doesn't always go as planned

We often get people in our stores who saw a DIY Pixel repair video online and clearly thought to themselves, "Eh, that doesn't look so hard." But instead of the quick fix the video promised, they ended up making a small issue much worse.

Pixel phones are tightly sealed, so getting inside without the right tools can damage display cables, puncture the battery, or compromise the phone's water resistance. Charging ports are another place to be careful—using a pin, needle, or other sharp object to dig out debris can bend or break the tiny contacts inside.

And be skeptical of unverified apps or firmware downloads promising a miracle fix. They can introduce stability or security problems that weren't there before.

You don't have to go it alone. Eliminate the guesswork and bring your Pixel to your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store instead. As an authorized Google® repair provider, our trusted experts are trained to get your broken device back up and running fast. And we’ll use parts, tools, and equipment provided by Google.

Easy ways to prevent common Google Pixel problems

No elaborate maintenance routine required. A few habits can help keep common Pixel problems from becoming your problem:

  • Keep Android updated—Google regularly releases fixes and performance improvements.
  • Update your apps—outdated apps can contribute to crashes, battery drain, and other weird behavior.
  • Watch the heat—extreme temperatures can accelerate battery wear.
  • Use quality USB-C accessories—stick with charging cables and adapters that meet USB-C standards.
  • Check background apps occasionally—if you don't use it, it probably doesn't need to keep running.
  • Use a case and screen protector—simple, yes. Still a lot easier than dealing with a cracked screen.

Nothing particularly glamorous here. But neither is explaining how your unprotected Pixel met the sidewalk.

FAQ

What are the most common Google Pixel problems?

Battery drain, charging issues, overheating, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection problems, app crashes, and slow performance are some of the Pixel problems we troubleshoot most often. Screen damage is common too, although that's usually the result of an unfortunate meeting with something harder than the screen.

Why is my Google Pixel battery draining so fast?

Background apps and outdated software can contribute to faster battery drain. If you've ruled those out and your Pixel still can't hold a charge like it used to, the battery itself may be wearing out.

What should I do if my Google Pixel isn't charging?

Try another compatible USB-C cable, adapter, and outlet first. Check the charging port for debris too—but skip the sharp objects. If different accessories don't help or the connection feels loose, the port may need professional attention.

Why does my Google Pixel keep overheating?

Heavy apps, software problems, environmental heat, or a battery issue can all contribute. Restart your Pixel, install available updates, and check for problematic apps. If it keeps overheating during normal use, we'd have it checked.

Is it safe to repair a Google Pixel yourself?

Software troubleshooting and basic maintenance? Sure. Opening the phone, replacing the battery or screen, or repairing the charging port? We'd leave those to a pro. Pixel phones are tightly sealed, and it's easy to damage internal components or compromise water resistance.

Can I clean my Google Pixel charging port myself?

Carefully, yes. But don't stick pins, needles, or other sharp objects inside. The contacts are small and easy to damage—which is a pretty frustrating way to turn some pocket lint into a charging port repair.
