Xbox turns on but nothing shows up—now what?
A blank screen looks dramatic. The fix might not be.

🧰 Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Easy (Simple, with a few catches)
⏱ Time involved: 5–20 minutes
⚠️ Risk level: Low—until troubleshooting turns into opening the console or messing with the HDMI port
💡 Pro insight: Check the cable and TV input before blaming the console. We've seen plenty of "broken" Xboxes that were really just plugged into HDMI 1 while the TV was waiting patiently on HDMI 2.
⚙️ Still staring at a blank screen? Bring your Xbox to a uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and let us figure out whether the problem is the HDMI port or something deeper.
Your Xbox® powers on. You hear it start up. Maybe the controller connects. Your TV, meanwhile, has decided its contribution to game night will be a completely blank screen.
Before we blame the console, check the simple stuff. We've seen plenty of Xbox display scares come down to a bad HDMI cable or the TV sitting on HDMI 2 while the console is plugged into HDMI 1.
Let's rule out the easy fixes first, then we'll figure out whether you're dealing with an actual hardware problem.
Why your Xbox turns on but has no display
If your Xbox turns on but nothing appears on the TV, start with the connection between the console and display—not an internal component.
The two things we'd check first are:
- The HDMI cable. A loose, frayed, or damaged cable can prevent the video signal from reaching your TV or monitor.
- The TV input. Your Xbox can be working perfectly while your TV is simply looking at the wrong HDMI port.
These simple connection problems are much more common than failures involving the Xbox HDMI port, GPU, or another internal component. So before you start mentally calculating repair costs, give the easy stuff its fair shot.
Check your Xbox HDMI cable first
Take a look at the HDMI cable running from your Xbox to the display. Make sure it's firmly connected at both ends and check the cable for obvious fraying or damage.
If everything looks normal, don't stop there. A cable can fail without looking particularly dramatic about it. Swap in another HDMI cable that you know works. If the picture comes back, you've found your problem—and this may be the cheapest Xbox repair you'll ever have.
If a second cable doesn't change anything, keep troubleshooting before assuming the console's HDMI port is damaged. We still have a couple of easy things to rule out.
Make sure your TV is on the right HDMI input
Yes, we're giving this its own section. Yes, there's a reason.
If your Xbox is plugged into HDMI 1 and your TV is displaying HDMI 2, you're going to get a whole lot of nothing no matter how many times you restart the console.
Cycle through the available inputs on your TV or monitor and give each one about five seconds before moving to the next. That gives the display enough time to recognize the signal and show the image.
And don't rely entirely on memory. Check which physical HDMI port the Xbox cable is plugged into, then make sure the input selected on-screen matches it. We've all been confidently wrong about this one.
Try your Xbox on another TV or monitor
Still no picture? Now we want to separate the Xbox from the display itself. Connect the console to another TV or monitor using an HDMI cable you know works.
- If the Xbox displays normally on the second screen, the console probably isn't your problem. Go back to the original TV or monitor and take a closer look at its HDMI inputs or settings.
- If you still get no display on a second screen with a known-good cable, you've now ruled out two of the easiest—and most common—causes.
That's when the console itself starts moving higher on our suspect list.
When an Xbox black screen could mean an HDMI port problem
Once you've tested another HDMI cable, checked the display inputs, and tried another TV or monitor without getting a picture, an internal hardware issue becomes more likely.
The HDMI port is one possibility. But this is where we'd resist trying to diagnose the exact component from the couch. A no-display Xbox can involve the HDMI connection or another internal problem, and figuring out which one requires inspecting and testing the console.
If you've exhausted the external checks and your Xbox still powers on with no display, bring it to your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store. We'll take the troubleshooting from there with a no-cost diagnostic, figure out what's keeping the picture from reaching your screen, and help get you back to gaming without replacing parts based on a guess.
FAQ
Why does my Xbox turn on but show no picture?
Start with the HDMI connection. A bad or loose HDMI cable and an incorrect TV input are common reasons an Xbox can power on normally while showing no picture.
Why is my Xbox screen black even though the console is on?
Your TV may not be receiving the Xbox's video signal. Check that the HDMI cable is secure, select the correct HDMI input, try another cable, and then test the Xbox with another display.
How do I know if my Xbox HDMI cable is bad?
Try another HDMI cable that you know works. If the picture comes back, the original cable was likely the problem.
How do I know if my Xbox HDMI port is broken?
Don't assume it's the HDMI port until you've tested another cable and another TV or monitor and confirmed the correct input. If there's still no display after those checks, the HDMI port or another internal component may need professional diagnosis.
Why does my TV say no signal when my Xbox is on?
Make sure your TV is set to the same HDMI input your Xbox is physically connected to. When switching inputs, wait about five seconds on each one so the display has time to recognize the signal.
Should I repair my Xbox if it turns on but has no display?
If you've ruled out the HDMI cable, TV input, and display and you're still getting a black screen or no signal, we'd have the console inspected by an Xbox pro. At that point, the issue may be inside the Xbox rather than something basic troubleshooting can fix.
