PS5 HDMI problems: Is it the cable or the port?

The simple test that separates port fails from cable flops

By Kyle, uBreakiFix Expert. Gamer. Technician. HDMI whisperer.

🧰 Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ (Easy to start, easy to mess up)

Time involved: 5–10 minutes—if it’s just the cable; hours if it's the port, if you know what you're doing.

⚠️ Risk level: High if you open the console—low if you don’t

💡 Pro insight: If you’re reaching for tools to “fix” the port itself, stop there. Those pins are soldered to the board—one wrong move can tear it clean off.

Fix it for me

You power on your PS5®, hear the familiar beep, and then… nothing. Just a black screen, like the world’s worst loading screen. Before you spiral into worst-case scenarios, take a breath. Not every HDMI issue means your PlayStation is toast. Sometimes the fix is as simple as swapping out the cable. Other times, yeah, the port itself is throwing in the towel.

I’ve repaired hundreds of these consoles at uBreakiFix® by Asurion, and most of the time, the problem comes down to one of three things: the console, the cord, or the TV. The trick is figuring out which one’s really at fault.

Let’s break down what I check first when a PS5 shows no picture, plus a few safe steps you can try at home before deciding you need to bring it in.

In this guide:

  1. Is it the HDMI cable?
  2. Is it the HDMI port?
  3. How to fix PS5 HDMI handshake issues
  4. Why DIY can go wrong

Is it the HDMI cable?

Start with the easiest suspect: the PS5 HDMI cable—it’s one of the biggest culprits behind a blank screen. Before you assume your console’s the issue, always test with a new HDMI cable or a different TV first. You’d be surprised how often that saves a trip to the shop.

Here’s what I always tell customers to try:

  • Try another cable. Borrow one from your TV, streaming box, or another console. If your PS5 springs back to life, you’ve found your fix.
  • Check for damage. Look at the cable ends for bent pins, frayed wires, or—believe it or not—bite marks. Pets love these cables for reasons I’ll never understand.
  • Swap the TV port. Plug the cable into another HDMI input on your TV. Sometimes the console’s fine—the display’s just being picky.

If a different cable fixes the problem, congrats. That’s about as easy a repair as it gets.

💡 Your future self with thank you: If you ever move or pack up your PS5, unplug the HDMI cable first. Transporting it while still connected is the number one way HDMI ports get broken.

Or is it the HDMI port?

When it’s not the cable, the HDMI port on the PS5 itself is usually next on my list. These ports are fragile—one hard yank or a bump while it’s still plugged in can bend the tiny metal pins inside. Even one pin slightly off can take down the whole connection.

Here’s how to spot port trouble:

  • The cable wiggles or feels loose when you plug it in.
  • You can see bent pins, dust, or debris inside the port.
  • You’ve tried multiple PS5 HDMI cables and TVs with no luck.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not dealing with a handshake issue—you’re looking at a broken port that needs repair.

💡 Good to know from a pro: The HDMI port on the PS5 is soldered to the motherboard, so trying to bend pins back or “realign” it yourself can rip the port clean off the board. Once that happens, you’re in for a much bigger repair.

How to fix PS5 HDMI handshake issues

Not every black screen means a damaged port. Sometimes your PS5 and TV just aren’t “talking” to each other properly—what we call an HDMI handshake issue.

Here’s what I recommend trying:

  • Power cycle both devices. Unplug the PS5 and your TV, wait a minute, then restart.
  • Try a different HDMI input on the TV.
  • Double-check the input setting. You’d be amazed how often it’s just on the wrong one.
  • Update your TV’s firmware. Outdated TV software can sometimes make it look like your console’s the problem when it’s not.

If that clears things up, no repair needed.

Why DIY can go wrong

If you’ve swapped cables, tested ports, and ruled out a handshake issue but still can’t get a picture, you’re in HDMI port repair territory. I get it—you see a few videos online and think, “How hard can it be?” But PS5 HDMI port repair isn’t like swapping a cable. The port’s soldered to the motherboard, and those joints are smaller than a grain of rice.

Without the right tools, heat control, and microscope work, you’ll probably do more harm than good. I’ve seen DIY fixes where someone tried to “bend the pins back,” and it tore the entire port off the board. At that point, the repair takes twice as long because we have to undo the damage first.

Save yourself the headache (and the extra cost) by letting someone who does this every day handle it. Schedule a repair with your

uBreakiFix® by Asurion store— we’ll get your PS5 back up and running the right way.
