Laptop won’t turn on at all—what’s safe to try first

Before you declare it dead, give the power supply a chance to defend itself

🧰 Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Easy (Simple, with a few catches)

⏱ Time involved: 10–20 minutes

⚠️ Risk level: Low for basic power checks—much higher once you start opening the laptop

💡 Pro insight: A laptop that looks completely dead isn't necessarily dead. Rule out the outlet, charger, battery, and charging port before blaming the motherboard.

⚙️ Still getting absolutely nothing? Bring your laptop to a uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and let us figure out where the power stops.

Fix it for me

A laptop that looks completely dead can send your brain straight to “well, that's expensive.” Hold that thought.

We've worked on plenty of no-power laptops where the problem turned out to be much simpler—a bad charger, a drained battery, a faulty outlet, or a charging port issue can all leave a laptop completely unresponsive.

So before you decide your computer is toast, let's work from the wall to the laptop and figure out where the power stops.

Why your laptop won't turn on

When a laptop has absolutely no power, the most common possibilities range from very simple to very much not:

  • The battery is completely drained.
  • The charger or power supply isn't working.
  • The charging port is damaged.
  • An internal hardware component has failed.

The symptoms can look almost identical from the outside, so don't jump straight to the worst-case scenario.

Start at the wall and work your way toward the laptop. You're trying to answer one question first: Is power actually reaching the computer?

Check whether your laptop is actually getting power

Start with the outlet. Plug in another device you know works or move the laptop charger to a different outlet. Then connect the charger and look closely at the laptop.

Do you see a charging light, power indicator, or any other sign that it's receiving power? If you do, that's useful. The laptop is getting at least some power even if it isn't booting.

If you get absolutely no indicator lights, don't assume the laptop itself has failed yet. The charger or charging port could still be the problem.

Also unplug everything that isn't essential: USB drives, external hard drives, docks, mice, headphones, and other accessories. Then try powering on the laptop again. You're removing extra variables before moving on to anything more complicated.

Try a power reset

If the laptop still isn't responding, try clearing any residual power. This is a safe troubleshooting step that can help when the laptop isn't responding normally to the Power button.

  1. Unplug the charger.
  2. Disconnect all peripherals.
  3. Remove the battery only if your laptop has a battery designed to be easily removable.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 30–60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the charger and try powering the laptop on again.

👉 One important distinction: if the battery is internal and accessing it requires opening the laptop, leave it connected. Disconnecting an internal battery is something we'd reserve for someone experienced with electronics repair.

Test the laptop charger and charging port

Still no power? Let's rule out the charger and port:

  • Try another compatible charger. If the laptop powers on, you've found your culprit.
  • Have multiple USB-C charging ports? Try another supported port to see if the laptop responds.
  • Check the connection. A plug that feels loose or only works when held at a certain angle can point to a damaged charging port.

If the charger checks out but the port doesn't, that's where we'd stop DIY. Charging port replacement requires opening the laptop, so we'd leave that repair to a pro.

Could a dead battery stop your laptop from turning on?

Yes—but there's a useful way to narrow this down.

A laptop with a dead battery may still run directly from its power supply when plugged in. On models with an easily removable battery, you can remove the battery, connect the charger, and try powering the laptop on.

  • If it starts normally without the battery, you've got a pretty strong clue that the battery is the problem.
  • If it still won't power on with a known-good charger, the issue may be elsewhere in the power system.

Again, we're talking about removable batteries here. If getting to the battery requires taking off the laptop's bottom cover, we'd leave that test to someone comfortable working inside electronics.

Signs your laptop has a bigger hardware problem

There are a few symptoms where we'd stop troubleshooting immediately rather than keep swapping chargers and holding buttons.

  • No indicator lights appear with a known-good charger. You've ruled out one of the easiest causes, so the fault may be deeper in the power system.
  • You smell something burning. Unplug the laptop and stop trying to turn it on.
  • The charging port or another area shows signs of burning. Don't reconnect power and "see what happens."
  • The laptop looks warped or deformed. That's not something we'd continue testing at home.

Those symptoms can point toward an internal hardware or motherboard problem.

If you've confirmed the outlet works, tested a compatible charger, disconnected accessories, and tried a power reset but your laptop is still completely unresponsive, you've done the useful DIY troubleshooting.

Bring it to your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and let us take it from there. We can trace the power problem, figure out whether you're dealing with the charging port, battery, or something deeper, and get you an actual diagnosis (at no cost to you) instead of making you keep pressing a power button that's clearly done negotiating.

FAQ

Why won't my laptop turn on even when plugged in?

The charger, charging port, battery, or an internal component could be preventing the laptop from powering on. Test the outlet and a compatible charger first, then look for charging or power indicator lights.

How do I know if my laptop battery or charger is bad?

Try a known-good compatible charger first. If your laptop has an easily removable battery, you can also remove it and test whether the laptop runs directly from the charger. If it does, the battery may be the problem.

Why does my laptop have no lights when plugged in?

No charging or power lights can indicate a bad charger, damaged charging port, or a deeper power-system problem. If you've already tested a compatible working charger, we'd have the laptop diagnosed.

Can a broken charging port stop a laptop from turning on?

Yes. If the charging port can't deliver power and the battery is drained, the laptop may appear completely dead. A loose connection or charging that only works at certain angles can also point toward port damage.

Is it safe to open a laptop that won't turn on?

We wouldn't recommend it unless you're experienced with electronics repair. Internal batteries, delicate connectors, clips, and other components can be damaged during disassembly, and electrostatic discharge can cause additional problems.
