Why the *!$% is my PS5 not working?
Your console's fine. Probably. Let's check.

You’ve been grinding for hours, down to your last sliver of health, finally face-to-face with the boss—and then your PS5® decides to crap out at the worst possible time.
We know that feeling. One minute you’re saving the world, the next you’re staring at a very expensive paperweight. The good news? Most of the issues that knock a PS5 out of play aren’t as dramatic as they seem. Some are quick fixes—unplug this, swap that, curse under your breath, and you’re back in the game. Others? If your toolkit consists of duct tape and wishful thinking, you’re better off letting a repair expert take it from here so you avoid becoming another story of a DIY gone wrong.
The trick is knowing the difference. Let’s break down the most common PS5 headaches we see all the time, what’s really going on, what’s safe to try at home—and when you should just save yourself the stress and let a pro handle it.
In this guide
- PS5 won’t turn on
- Stuck on a black screen
- Controller not connecting
- Controller stick drift
- Overheating console
- Fan too loud
- Disc drive not reading games
- Storage errors (“Repairing Console Storage”)
- Crashing or freezing mid-game
1. PS5 won't turn on
You press the button. Nothing happens. Before you throw it out the window, know this: many “dead” PS5s brought to use for diagnosis just have a bad cord or a surge protector doing its job.
⚙️ Try this first:
Unplug it. Wait. If you have a surge protector, skip it for now and just plug it directly into the wall. Got a spare cord? Swap it in. You’d be surprised how many people walk in ready to buy a whole new console when the only problem was the cable.
🛠️ Leave this part to a pro:
If your PS5 still won’t respond—or it flashes on and cuts right back out—you’re likely dealing with a power supply issue inside the console. That’s one of those “don’t open it at your kitchen table” situations; it’s one for a repair expert.
2. Stuck on a black screen
The startup beep hits, the TV stays black, and suddenly you’re questioning all your life choices. Spoiler alert: it’s usually the HDMI. We once had someone come in swearing their PS5 “fried itself.” Nope—their HDMI cable looked like their dog had used it as a chew toy.
⚙️ Safe to tinker:
Swap in a different HDMI cable. Try another port on your TV. Sometimes it’s not the console—it’s the screen.
⛔ Safer to stop:
If you’ve tried more than one cable and multiple displays with zero luck, odds are the port itself is toast. PS5 HDMI repairs are one of our most common PlayStation fixes, and for good reason. Those ports are fragile. Replacing one at home is like performing brain surgery with a butter knife.
3. Controller not connecting
Nothing kills the vibe like a PS5 controller that refuses to sync. Luckily, it’s usually just a pairing hiccup.
⚙️ Try this first:
Plug it in with a USB cable and reset it. That usually gets it talking again.
🛠️ Leave this part to a pro:
If none of your controllers will connect—or if they connect, then drop out mid-game—the problem’s deeper. We’ve traced plenty of these back to a bad Bluetooth module inside the console. Not something you want to tackle without soldering skills.
4. Controller stick drift
Few things are more maddening than controller drift. Your character is wandering around on their own while you’re just trying to loot a chest.
⚙️ Safe to tinker:
Reset and recalibrate your controller, then carefully clean the sticks. Sometimes, dust is all it takes.
⛔ Safer to stop:
If you’ve done all that and the drift keeps coming back, the joystick modules are worn out. That’s a hardware swap we can—and do—handle in our stores.
5. Overheating console
Your PS5 shuts itself down mid-game. Not cool—literally. Chances are, it’s overheating. We see this a lot, especially when consoles are tucked into entertainment centers with no airflow.
⚙️ Try this first:
Don’t stick it in a cabinet next to your modem and your scented candle collection. Give it room to breathe. Blast some compressed air through the vents.
🛠️ Leave this part to a pro:
If it keeps shutting down after that, the cooling system needs attention. Fans, heat sinks, paste—we’ve handled it all. And yes, we’ve opened up PS5s that looked like they were storing a year’s worth of dust bunnies inside.
6. Fan too loud
If your PS5 sounds like it’s about to take off, that ’s the fan working harder than it should.
⚙️ Safe to tinker:
Clean the vents, move it out of tight spaces, and see if it calms down.
⛔ Safer to stop:
If the roar doesn’t go away, the fan itself may be failing. We replace these often—it’s a quick job when you’ve got the parts and know-how, a headache if you don’t.
7. Disc drive not reading games
You put a disc in and… nothing. And suddenly you miss cartridges. Sometime the problem is the drive, sometimes it’s the game. One customer once brought us a PS5, convinced the drive had “eaten” his game, and it turned out it was just a scratched disc.
⚙️ Try this first:
Test a few different games, clean them gently, and restart your console. Easy wins.
🛠️ Leave this part to a pro:
If no disc works, the drive is the problem. That repair’s not for the faint of heart—it involves pulling apart delicate pieces that are easy to break.
8. Storage errors (“Repairing Console Storage”)
That dreaded “Repairing Console Storage” message can look scarier than it is. Most of the time, it’s just the system checking itself after a crash.
⚙️ Safe to tinker:
Restart the console, update it, and see if it clears. Most of the time, it does.
⛔ Safer to stop:
If you’re stuck in the loop, that’s a red flag that the SSD could be failing. That’s a deeper repair, and one best handled by a repair expert unless your idea of fun is potentially voiding warranties.
9. Crashing or freezing mid-game
Few things are more rage-inducing than a freeze mid-boss fight. But it doesn’t always mean doom.
⚙️ Try this first:
Keep the system ventilated, run the updates, and reinstall glitchy games. Sometimes that’s enough.
🛠️ Leave this part to a pro:
If your PS5 keeps freezing no matter what you’re playing, it’s likely a deeper hardware problem. We’ve seen this plenty, and it usually means something inside needs replacing. A quick diagnostic from a pro should be able to help you pinpoint which one.
A broken PS5 doesn’t mean game over
Some fixes are easy wins; others are rabbit holes that’ll just waste your Saturday. The smart move is knowing when to stop tinkering. If your console still won’t cooperate—or you’d rather not risk making it worse—bring it to someone who deals with these tech meltdowns every day.
